GCCF BREEDING POLICY - The quote below is the second half of  an editorial section entitled BREEDING CATS in the FAB Cat Care (Issue 1 2010) magazine. (The first  refers to the recent studies on dogs and general breeding concern, "Obsession with the purity of the breed and drives towards extreme conformation crop up again and again in animal breeding", by way of introduction.)

"As we said before cats are in a better state than dogs, but we cannot be complacent. Let's put the feline house in order as soon as possible. Indeed things are happening.

We applaud the Governing Council of the cat Fancy (GCCF) for their new publication, GCCF Breeding Policy - guidelines for healthy breeding'. They have been brave enough to stand against the registration of certain breeds, such as the Scottish Fold and Munchkin, and refuse to consider hybrid breeds, such as the Savannah and others, which are springing up all over the world.

We have to remember that  the GCCF is funded by breeders registering their cats and kittens, and limiting what they will accept will limit their income, so having principles can come with costs. Those registration bodies with the health of cats at heart and strong enough to say when things have gone too far and make practical and large enough changes to put things right, should be given credit for their ethical standpoint and owners encouraged to buy kittens from breeders who follow their breeding policy and put health first."

As yet there's no direct reference to the breeding policy on the FAB website, but it does carry the tag, "You will also find excellent information on all areas of cat breeding on the website of the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) - the feline equivalent of the Kennel Club." The Breeding Policy can be found on the GCCF website.
